1. DIMENSIONS
OAK 1306-21Q
Length (cm): 140
Width (cm) :
minimum…including waney edge: NA
maximum..including waney edge: NA
average….including waney edge: 12
Thickness (cm): 5
Net Product Weight (KG): 8
dimension notes :
a) Our Webshop is set in centimetres by popular request. We are happy to talk in feet, inches, metres or millimetres.
b) Length is the measurement along the grain, following the tree from ground level upwards and usually the largest measurement.
Width is the measurement across the grain, usually the second largest measurement, often described as ‘depth’ which should only be applied to finished items of
furniture such as cabinets and shelves when referring to the distance out into the room from the wall or back of the piece.
Thickness is the smallest measurement, also across the grain, seen as the measurement across the edge or end of a board.
In square sections width and thickness are the same.

2. TREE PROVENANCE & SUSTAINABILITY
OAK 1306-21Q
BOARD(S) ALL FROM ONE TREE WHICH GREW AT: BRAIDWOOD, CARLUKE, LANARKSHIRE, UK
provenance notes :
Every one of our boards has a number, such as 1372A-6, with a record of its provenance and sequence within the tree.
This means it is the 6th board or slice cut from the first length of the tree nearest the stump/ground (A.).
B would be the second length if the tree was big enough to cut another section from further up the tree, usually above the first branch.
C, D etc getting smaller and usually more bendy and less stable as you go higher up the tree. All from tree number 1372 in this example, which records the individual tree,
where it grew and lived its life on a particular estate/woodland/garden in the UK which Lanarkshire Hardwoods buys from.
sustainability notes :
Patrick visits every woodland to view, measure and record every individual tree before purchasing, checking for sustainability of the source.
He looks at the re-planting or natural regeneration aspects on the site and reasons for felling if the trees are not naturally wind blown.
He checks felling licences if applicable and sensitivity for the landscape during extraction.
We only use approved sustainable and relaible sources.
The Wood Place / Lanarkshire Hardwoods are founding members of Scottish Working Woods; Scottish Working Woods (SWW) is an organisation with a licenced label scheme to encourage and support
the use of all things made from Scottish woodland produce. Whilst based in Scotland SWW is more essentially interested in the idea of LOCAL & LOW MILES ETHICAL SUSTAINABLE
trading of wood and wood products between small businesses and the public. We source most of our timber from within a 100 mile radius of
the sawmill and the vast bulk within 50.

CHARGES FOR DIFFERENT POSTCODE AREAS:
We list a price for all UK MAINLAND STANDARD POSTCODES and allow customers with NI, IOM, UK Islands & Scottish Highlands postcodes to place orders using the same automated shipping figure BUT :
NI, IOM, UK Islands & Scottish Highlands orders are subject to some size restrictions – so long boards may need to be cut for transport or we may need to charge extra in many cases – this is too complicated a system to automate for the checkout without charging excessive amounts to cover most options so please contact us to check before ordering if you are Highlands & Islands / Northern Ireland and we will get you a real time best price quote, which often will be the same as the standard UK mainland charges if the board is 115cm or less and 15kg or less, or can be cut to these sizes. This system is based on trust so we rely on you to contact us before ordering if your postcode is non standard and reserve the right to halt shipment until we have received any surcharge, or we may refund you in full and cancel the order.
The delivery charge is displayed in the product description above, or to see the delivery charge please enter your chosen product in your shopping basket / cart – it differs by weight and size.

5. SEASONING & MOISTURE CONTENT INFORMATION
OAK 1306-21Q
This is a ‘kiln dried’ product and the moisture content level is between 6 to 10%, average 8 to 9, which is good for a typical central heated home.
Further small shrinkage sometimes occurs on boards used as beams, mantels and shelves above hot woodburning stoves.
If you store or work on our wood in a cold, damp garage, shed or workshop it will absorb moisture, expand and warp.
If some warping or cupping is acceptable for rustic use, you can use our boards outside for signs and garden furniture etc.
but they are intended for a central heated interior environment.
Wrapping in cling film or pallet wrap will reduce the effects of dampness if you need to store in a shed/garage etc.
We slowly air dry the wood for about 18 months for every 2.5cm / inch of board thickness, 24 months for oak.
We then use the kiln only to finish off the seasoning process over a slow 3 to 6 week cycle on average, sometimes longer.
As a result The Wood Place / Lanarkshire Hardwoods timber is slow dried and thoroughly seasoned.
Consequently our timber stays flat and stable in a wide range of environments.
Any movement due to moisture content changes, up or down, is minimal due to our traditional and extremely thorough seasoning process.

6. BOARD FINISH INFORMATION
OAK 1306-21Q
Supplied in Planed and Thicknessed form.
Boards will have been planed or milled flat firstly on one face then flipped and milled again, calibrated to a uniform thickness within a max range of plus/minus 5mm, usually within the range plus/minus 1mm.
One face, the one with the price label showing, will have been selected as the best face and may have a better planed finish or have been coarse sanded to remove the heaviest planing/machining marks, which may show in the photograph of the reverse face. Only about 0.5 to 1mm of material needs to be removed to eliminate the machining marks.
Additionally some localised sunken patches of un-planed/milled areas may be present if removing these would have reduced the overall board thickness too much, de-stabilising or spoiling the look of the board. These will normally be on the reverse side if at all.
We will picture some non-planed areas in the product pictures but the image of one such area does not mean it is the only single area, merely that the board has one or more like this. They should be easy to see as being a different colour.
Finally, for a perfect finish we recommend further sanding of the product to remove all machining marks before polishing.

7. WOOD TYPE INFORMATION
OAK 1306-21Q
Oak is the most commonly used native Hardwood in the UK, mainly out of tradition – it was frequently used in centuries past for several reasons – the dense hard wood being very durable to moisture makes it a good building material and the difficult to dent timber means it is good for flooring and hard-wearing tabletops. It also has high resistance to charring. A chief reason for use before the age of efficient saws and sawmills was its ability to be cleft, that is split into rough boards down the length of the grain with wedges, then smoothed flat with planes or adzes for furniture and flooring. The resultant cleft timber would always follow the grain perfectly, revealing the silvery medullary rays on the face and the bonus of such boards being that they are very stable with little shrinkage and warping potential. Boards produced these days at a sawmill with the same silver rays effect are called ‘quarter sawn’ and have a higher value than ‘crown cut’ boards, and usefully any wood type / species cut quarter sawn will be very much more stable, not just oak.
Very large diameter old growth UK oaks cut on the quarter can yield very fine wide boards of stable timber showing a richly coloured board with attractive strong presence of silver medullary rays and often a ripple or flame pattern.
Oak is not, however, an easy timber to work as it blunts tools quickly and is so hard it is difficult to sand smooth. The edges splinter easily so gloves are often wise when handling oak. Boards of any thickness can sometimes show patchy colour in the core, possibly a side effect of the slow seasoning process. Our boards are given 2 years per inch/25mm of board thickness to season, sometimes more. Oak generally has a large movement in service so will warp/twist/cup/bow readily with small changes in moisture (far less so with quarter sawn) and ends will split / check if boards are put too near to high heat sources.
Burr Oak can be pure burr or partly burred, perhaps only on the edges (we use the term ‘Burry’ to cover boards that have smaller amounts of patch burr but are not clearly defined as the cats paw ‘pipp’ or ‘pippy’ oak) and is generally more richly coloured than the surrounding plainer timber. The wood is cut from the protruding growths on a tree which have grown as if in a deformed manner; some trees are heavily burred almost all the way to their heart and all along their length while others have small numbers of individual burrs protruding. Our burr boards are almost always cut with the natural waney edge to exploit every square inch of this valuable natural resource. Because the grain in a burr is so wild and goes in many different directions it is better at resisting splitting and is fairly stable. It is more dense than ordinary oak heartwood and polishes well.
All forms of oak take polish well and as the timber is so naturally dense and oily, polishes do not soak in far and so not many coats are required to fill the grain. Needless to say a Danish oil finish compliments oak well. The sapwood – the paler parts near the bark – is not durable, or strong and is very absorbent of polish and stain. It can still be used in rustic waney edge projects but will take a lot more polish than the much denser heartwood.
If staining oak, an old tradition is to ‘fume’ it using a saucer of ammonia in a plastic ‘tent’ or sealed box. Different timings produce different shades of brown, depending on the amount of natural tannin in the oak being used. It is generally, however, a more even and natural looking stain to any painted on type.
